Description
Amrit is the Sikh rite of baptism into the order of the Khalsa, the pure ones. The ceremony derives from the original one performed by Guru Gobind Singh at Anandpur Sahib in 1699. With an iron khanda, he stirred water in a steel bowl while reciting the Sikh prayers, infusing the water with sacred sound. Amrit, which means nectar, was first administered to the Five Beloved Ones, the Panj Piare. They, in turn, administered the Amrit to the Guru himself. The ceremony today is based on the original.
