Artist's Description
Amrit is the Sikh rite of baptism into the order of the Khalsa, the pure ones. The ceremony derives from the original one performed by Guru Gobind Singh at Anandpur Sahib in 1699. With an iron khanda, he stirred water in a steel bowl while reciting the Sikh prayers, infusing the water with sacred sound. Amrit, which means nectar, was first administered to the Five Beloved Ones, the Panj Piare. They, in turn, administered the Amrit to the Guru himself. The ceremony today is based on the original.
About Gurukirn Khalsa
Gurukirn Kaur Khalsa has been an artist since she was a child. She attended the Ethel Walker boarding school in Connecticut where she focused her energy on the creative arts, especially painting and poetry. After boarding school, she attended Pomona College in Claremont, CA. and later transferred to the University of California, Santa Barbara where she graduated with a BA in Art in 1974 and received her Teacher’s Credential in 1975. Gurukirn Kaur, an artist and poet, pursues her passion for watercolor as a juried member of the Arizona Watercolor Association, Arizona Artists Guild, andTucson Plein Air Painters Society.
